- They are generally around 40 cm but can be as big as 80 cm. The saw scaled snakes in North India are much larger then the ones in South India.
- Their bodies are covered with small keeled scales with a dry appearance.
- Body color ranges from brown, red, gray, black and brown mixed with red.
- Their head is a triangular shape, broader than neck. They have a very short and rounded snout. They have two long fangs on the side of their mouths.
- Small tail that is pointed and a red tongue.
- Light colored spots on top usually light yellow or light brown.
- Their belly is whitish or pinkish.
- Their eyes have a vertical pupil.
